Ohio: Gatorade Player of the Year

GlenOak senior C.J. McCollum has been named the 2008-09 Gatorade Ohio Boys Basketball Player of the Year.

The award recognizes outstanding athletic performance and high standards of academic achievement and character.

McCollum, a 6-foot-2 guard who averaged 29.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.6 steals and 2.2 assists for GlenOak (18-5), is now a finalist for Gatorade's national honor.

McCollum, who has a 3.2 grade-point average, became GlenOak's leading scorer this season, finishing with 1,405 points, passing the mark of 1,297 points set by Kosta Koufos.

McCollum has signed a national letter of intent to continue his basketball career at Lehigh University.

Ohio: Division 1 First Team Ballet

Big men -- in height and accomplishments -- dominate the 2009 Associated Press Division I and II All-Ohio boys basketball teams announced Monday.

Jared Sullinger, a junior from poll champion and state-bound Columbus Northland, is the player of the year in the big-school division. In Division II, the award is shared by Kenton's Garrick Sherman and St. Paris Graham's Josh Schuler.

Sullinger, a 6-foot-9 player who has already committed to Ohio State, averaged 19.9 points and 14.8 rebounds while shooting 67 percent from the field. He led Northland to the No. 1 ranking and will also be on display in the state semifinals this Friday against Warren Harding, which was represented on first-team All-Ohio by 6-5 Desmar Jackson.

The coaches of the year in Division I are Dublin Scioto's Tony Bisutti, Cincinnati Princeton's Josh Andrews, Al Stacey of Lorain Admiral King and Barberton's Ken Rector.

Sherman is a 6-10 senior headed for Michigan State who averaged 23.4 points, 16.4 rebounds and 3.4 blocked shots a game. Schuler, a 6-2 senior who will play at North Dakota, scored 24.1 points for the state's top-ranked team.

Sharing coaching honors are Don Vogt of Cambridge, Circleville Logan Elm's Doug Stiverson and Dru Joyce II of Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary. Logan Elm and SVSM both made it to the state semifinals.

The all-state selections were based on the recommendations of a media panel.

Nix is Michigan's Mr. Basketball

6'9 285 pound Derrick Nix of Detroit Pershing is the recipient 29th of the Hal Schram awarded to Michigan's best senior. Nix has improved immensely over his high school career, which started at Detroit Murray-Wright. Murray-Wright closed after his sophomore year and he was in integral part of Pershing's state run as a junior where they stumbled in the state final to defending state champion, Saginaw. Pershing will have an opportunity to avenge last year's loss but first they must beat Warren De LaSalle in Tuesday night's 7:30 quarterfinal game at the University of Detroit-Mercy's Calihan Hall.

The big guy averaged 15 points and 15 rebounds and vastly improved from the player that many in Michigan remember from last season. Nix is headed to Michigan State and he will prove a tough battle inside for college opponents just as he has in high school.

The award is only available for seniors and the field was limited to five.

all sixteen games will be played on Tuesday, March 24th, at
various locations across the state. All of last year's champions
were knocked off but there are plenty of former winners that are
still in the mix. The quarterfinal winners will continue @
Michigan State's Breslin Center. The Class C & D semifinal
games are on Thursday, March 26th. The Class A & B
semifinals are on Friday, March 27th. All final games are on
Saturday, March 28th.

Hawks land, but Kaufman soars!

Berlin Hiland, a Division 4 powerhouse in the state of Ohio was knocked out of Regional tournament play earlier this week by Cleveland Lutheran East. Hiland was lead by 6-foot-4, 2012, wing guard Dylan Kaufman's 24 points as he put on a 15 foot' pull-up clinic against a more athletic Lutheran East squad. Kaufman who plays like a seasoned veteran favors going to his right-side at this early stage of his game. He is capable of catching and shooting from 20 feet and is also a scoring threat off the dribble with numerous behind the back, inside-out kill-spot jumpers. He will also surprise you with his athletic ability as he is capable of playing above the rim in transition. Time will only tell for this young Hawk. Perry Reese would be proud!
Dylan will be playing his AAU ball with Team CBIZ.
