Ohio: Division 1 First Team Ballet

Big men -- in height and accomplishments -- dominate the 2009 Associated Press Division I and II All-Ohio boys basketball teams announced Monday.

Jared Sullinger, a junior from poll champion and state-bound Columbus Northland, is the player of the year in the big-school division. In Division II, the award is shared by Kenton's Garrick Sherman and St. Paris Graham's Josh Schuler.

Sullinger, a 6-foot-9 player who has already committed to Ohio State, averaged 19.9 points and 14.8 rebounds while shooting 67 percent from the field. He led Northland to the No. 1 ranking and will also be on display in the state semifinals this Friday against Warren Harding, which was represented on first-team All-Ohio by 6-5 Desmar Jackson.

The coaches of the year in Division I are Dublin Scioto's Tony Bisutti, Cincinnati Princeton's Josh Andrews, Al Stacey of Lorain Admiral King and Barberton's Ken Rector.

Sherman is a 6-10 senior headed for Michigan State who averaged 23.4 points, 16.4 rebounds and 3.4 blocked shots a game. Schuler, a 6-2 senior who will play at North Dakota, scored 24.1 points for the state's top-ranked team.

Sharing coaching honors are Don Vogt of Cambridge, Circleville Logan Elm's Doug Stiverson and Dru Joyce II of Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary. Logan Elm and SVSM both made it to the state semifinals.

The all-state selections were based on the recommendations of a media panel.

Nix is Michigan's Mr. Basketball

6'9 285 pound Derrick Nix of Detroit Pershing is the recipient 29th of the Hal Schram awarded to Michigan's best senior. Nix has improved immensely over his high school career, which started at Detroit Murray-Wright. Murray-Wright closed after his sophomore year and he was in integral part of Pershing's state run as a junior where they stumbled in the state final to defending state champion, Saginaw. Pershing will have an opportunity to avenge last year's loss but first they must beat Warren De LaSalle in Tuesday night's 7:30 quarterfinal game at the University of Detroit-Mercy's Calihan Hall.

The big guy averaged 15 points and 15 rebounds and vastly improved from the player that many in Michigan remember from last season. Nix is headed to Michigan State and he will prove a tough battle inside for college opponents just as he has in high school.

The award is only available for seniors and the field was limited to five.

1. Derrick Nix, Detroit Pershing -- 1,726 points (Michigan State U.)
2. Ben Simons, Cadillac -- 1,638 points (Providence College)
3. Korey VanDussen, Zeeland East -- 1,298 points
4. Dion Sims, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s -- 1,027 points (Michigan State U.-football scholarship)
5. Eso Akunne, Ann Arbor Richard -- 782 points (University of Michigan-walk on)
Note: Points are awarded on a 5-3-1 basis.

Hawks land, but Kaufman soars!

Berlin Hiland, a Division 4 powerhouse in the state of Ohio was knocked out of Regional tournament play earlier this week by Cleveland Lutheran East. Hiland was lead by 6-foot-4, 2012, wing guard Dylan Kaufman's 24 points as he put on a 15 foot' pull-up clinic against a more athletic Lutheran East squad. Kaufman who plays like a seasoned veteran favors going to his right-side at this early stage of his game. He is capable of catching and shooting from 20 feet and is also a scoring threat off the dribble with numerous behind the back, inside-out kill-spot jumpers. He will also surprise you with his athletic ability as he is capable of playing above the rim in transition. Time will only tell for this young Hawk. Perry Reese would be proud!
Dylan will be playing his AAU ball with Team CBIZ.

Orchard Lake St. Mary's Wins at Home

The Eagles hosted Detroit Finney and their talented division 1 juniors but it was Orchard Lake St. Mary's 6'6 senior forward Dion Sims (Michigan State-football and basketball) and his 18 point, 8 rebound performance that paved the way to a 58-48 victory.

19-13, 35-20, 45-32, 58-48

The first quarter's five lead changes charged the small crowd of 500 as the team's most notable players, Sims and Finney's 6'6 guard Isaiah Sykes, did what they do best, fill stats. Sims scored six of his eighteen points in the quarter, pulled down four of his eight rebounds, and blocked a shot in the quarter. Sykes scored four of his eighteen, grabbed four of his thirteen boards, added an assist and a steal in the quarter.

O.L.S.M. 6' senior point guard Jeff Jones ran a solid floor game and had a few assists that contributed to the Eagles lead. One of those assists went to 5'11 shooting guard Evan Webster '10, nine points and two threes, and another went to the powerful 6'5 center Quaran Jones '12, eight points and eight rebounds. 5'11 point guard Suave Lavallis '09 had five assists, and super speedy 5'9 point guard Gary Hunter '10 came up with a couple of steals and assists.

Sykes is a skilled lefty with nice bounce and solid court vision that Michigan State, Michigan, Tennessee, Syracuse and other high major programs are a keeping a serious eye on. He was eight of eleven from the field and three of four from the charity stripe.

Finney's other juniors were relativley quiet. 6'4 wing Terrance Jackson scored nine, 6'6 forward Brandon Williams six, 6' shooting guard Rashad Reeves five, and 6'7 forward Devon Haynes four.

In the stands:

Grosse Pointe North scouted the game as they are in a district with Finney. Warren De La Salle might face either opponent in a regional or quarterfinal matchup and they were there in full force scouting the game.

Syracuse Pulls a Center

According to sources close to the situation, 6'11 DaShonte Riley, a senior center for nationally ranked Detroit Country Day, made a commitment this week to the Orangeman after an official visit to Syracuse in mid-February. Riley had previously given a verbal commitment to Georgetown but that was retracted this past fall. Riley will be counted on to add defense and rebounding to Jim Boeheim's 2-3 zone.

Oak Park Wins on the Road

An early game in Michigan took place this past Friday night at Southfield-Lathrup Chargers hosted the Knights of Oak Park. Oak Park took an early lead and never looked back winning 80-61.

Oak Park led 19-13, 30-22, 49-34, 80-61.

A solid win for the Knights as they controlled the boards with solid interior defense and ten blocked shots.

Oak Park commanded the glass with a 37-28 rebound advantage and 6'1 Sam Burton's playmaking paved the was offensively. He balanced his points throughout the game while flashing four assists in the first four minutes of the third quarter. Burton is amongst the best unsigned point guard in Michigan. He finished with 25 points, 9 dimes, 6 boards, and 4 steals.

Lathrup scrapped for points which came far and few in between. 6'6 small forward Bryan Coleman '10 led the Chargers with 21 points, 6'5 Roy Marble, jr. '10 added 15, and 6'1 guard Drew Gilchrist '10 scored 14.

85 FOUL SHOTS! Need a drink?

If you wanted to get a early glimpse of the Elks Foul shooting contest you should have been in Warrensville Heights on Friday night. 2009,Guard Carl "Tay" Jones, a St. Joseph's (Pa.) recruit, scored 24 points for Garfield Heights, and backcourt partner Trey Lewis hit all (4) four of his 3-point shots to tally 18 points.
It was the Bulldogs' 6-6 sophomore center, Will Weeks, who made the most impact on the game, though. He scored 16 points and grabbed 19 rebounds, and helped Mario Hines and Fred Chatmon - both 6-9 - form a defensive wall around the basket.

Everybody got to the free throw line, and often. Garfield Heights struggled there, making just 25 of 50 foul shots. Shaker Heights (10-12), which was led by guard and Cleveland State recruit Anthony Wells' 26 points, was 21 of 35 at the line. The teams combined to shoot 59 free throws in the second half.

Bob Wonson, who is retiring as the Shaker Heights coach after leading the Raiders to 361 wins in 24 seasons, missed the game with an illness.

Garfield advances to the District-Semi's to take on Cleveland St. Ignatious, which beat Bedford tonight 62-60.

University of Detroit-Mercy Lands Guard

Quality Education Academy's 6'2 180 pound Jason Calliste had offers from Tennessee-Chatanooga, UNC-Charlotte, and Marshall but chose the Univerity of Detroit-Mercy. He's a top 100 player nationally according to Rivals.com.

Calliste plays on the national scene for the North Carolina four-year academy and for Roe Russell of Grassroots Canada in the spring/summer.

Quality's head coach Isaac Pitts is proud of Calliste's decision. Calliste is averaging 24 ppg and 11 assists per game playing against some of the nation's best schools like Oak Hill Academy and Patterson.

Titans' fans can make a trip to Eerie, PA. and watch their future point guard from March 12-14.

IPS' Review of the Top Seniors in Michigan

Here's a look at the top seniors in Michigan, who are enjoying succesfull seasons. Some of these players will make the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan Hal Schram Mr. Basketball list. Here's a review of players that the high school sports fan and college coaches can catch a glimpse of for the last time in high school as the playoffs are near. No order.

Derick Nix 6'9 center Detroit Pershing- No player on this list has come as far as Nix in four-years. He's vastly improved from last year's semi-final and final games and will play for Michigan State next year. Too many coaches may remember missed bunnies from last year.

Jordan Morgan 6'8 power forward University of Detroit-Jesuit- Morgan is headed to the University of Michigan and is a dominating force in the paint for the Cubs. While he's a double-double player, he hasn't put up monster numbers.

Shane Moreland 6'2 shooting guard Flint Powers- Moreland's a crowd favorite as blends fundamentals with flash, pizzaz, and sharp-shooting. A championship is the only thing that escaped this Charger as he leads the top Catholic school in the state. He is an unsigned senior. An unsigned senior has never won the award.

DeAngelo Hailey 6'3 shooting guard Detroit Central- Mr. PSL 2009 award winner and a sleeper amongst many coaches in the state. One of the state's best shooters with a hand in his face or not who stays in head coach Ben Kelso structured offense. He is an unsigned senior.

Sam Burton 6'1 point guard Oak Park- A former teammate of Hailey's at Detroit Central, this point guard has taken on scoring duties at Oak Park and has put up solid numbers this season in teammates absence. Burton is unsigned.

Jamie Stewart 6'3 guard Livonia Clarenceville- Stewart fought off injuries early in high school to garnish looks and offers from nearly 25 Division I programs primarily east of the Mississippi. He jumps out of the gym and decommitted to Eastern Michigan in the fall after a five month commitent.

Austin Harper 6'3 guard Grand Haven- Western Michigan is getting a strong and athletic guard for the next four-years. Harper is a solid scorer who can create for himself with explosive moves. He has a good chance to lead his team deep into the state tournament.

Drew Valentine 6'5 wing Lansing Sexton- This future Oakland Grizzly was out for the first month of the year as he recovered from a knee injury leaving him time to catch up to speed with others on this list. He is a stat sheet filler and known throughout the state of Michigan.

Kimani Boynton 6'1 shooting guard Detroit Southeastern- A surprise too many but not to those in the Detroit area as he transfered from Allen Academy to Southeastern after his sophomore year. He's been a steady scorer for the Jungaleers. You might see the next Kenny Lofton at the Breslin for the Class A semi and final games. He's an unsigned senior.

Duke Mondy 6'3 guard Grand Rapids Catholic Central- This lefty is a mystery to many voters on the eastside of Michigan but is headed to Providence. For those who don't know Mondy, think Laval Lucas-Perry. He's not overly athletic but knows how to get points.

Korey VanDussen 6'3 guard Zeeland East- Slick scoring guard who adds flash to his game when the time is right. VanDussen leads an undefeated Chix team into the state tournament. A fantastic senior year. He is amongst the top unsigned guards in Michigan.

Doug Anderson 6'5 power forward Kalamazoo Central- Dunkin' Doug. Every A.D. in the state should be happy when he visits as he fills the seats. He's a headliner on the state's #2 team in Class A. He's another unsigned senior.

Ben Simons 6'7 small forward Cadillac- He's headed to Drake and a notebale player since his sophomore year which always grows a strong base when the Mr. Basketball award winner is considered. He can shoot it with the best in Michigan and has put up big numbers in key locations, ie. Breslin.

Vonn Jones 5'10 combo guard Hartland- Those in the Kensington Lakes Athletic Association know that Jones is one of the best. Those that have watched him on large stages, ie Motor City Roundball Classic, know that he's one of the state's most complete guards. He's an unsigned senior.

Matt Balkema 6'10 center Warren Cousino- Amongst the best big men in the state on the grid iron and on the hard court. He may have Ron English (EMU's Head Coach-Football) pleading with the basketball coaches and A.D. if he can borrow the high school Defensive Tackle/Tight End.

Aaron Clayborn 6'5 guard Benton Harbor- He's strong, on a solid team, and a leader that has lead Benton Harbor to victories that have passed them by in the past. Clayborn has verballed to Texas Southern and lacks state-wide pub.

Holden Greiner 6'8 small forward Travers City St. Francis- Greiner is amongst the most versatile on the list and Lehigh gains a solid freshman next year. He can shoot, put the ball on the floor, and he may be in E. Lansing at the end of March in the Class C Championship.

Andrew Vandeirendonck 6'5 guard Wyandotte- He's deceptively athletic and a solid scorer that's headed to Northwood (MI.) U. He's length causes many steals at the top the Bears' 1-3-1 defense.

Alex Marcotullio 6'3 guard Warren De La Salle- Marcotullio is playing a bit out of position (point guard) which has hurt his numbers a bit but not the fact that when things are going well he's one of the state's best off-guards. He recently won a Catholic League Championship and is headed to Northwestern.

Eso Akune 6'3 forward Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard- Built like he should be in the upcoming NFL draft Akune has been a bull in the Catholic League since his fresman year and name recognition helps when the Mr. Basketball award is voted on by the Basketball Coaches Association of Michigan Members. He passed up division 1 offers for a chance to walk-on to the University of Michigan. (pictured)

Donnavan Kirk 6'9 power forward Detroit Country Day- Kirk is headed to University of Miami (FL.) and one of the best rebounders in the state. A recent flashback to Grand Ledge's Al Horford is a fine example. He has to share the wealth on one of the Nation's best teams.

DaShonte Riley 6'11 center Detroit Country Day- Riley is the most known amongst the group and he recently made a commitment to Syracuse after a February visit. He gains much notarity for a Class B championship his sophomore year and he's been near 7' since is freshman year.

Mike Fugate 6' combo guard White Lake Lakeland- The state's most underrated guard puts up near triple digits every time he hits the floor and Saginaw Valley State is getting what they need for next year. A bigger and more noteable conference would've landed him higher and on a mid-major roster.

Daniel Sutherlin 6'5 small forward Detroit Renaissance- A guard as a freshman and sophomore, Sutherlin has transformed himself into a powerful small forward who can still shoot it. He's an above the rim player who is recieving looks from mid-major programs.

Dion Sims 6'5 forward Orchard Lake St. Mary's- He's headed to Michigan State to play football and basketball his freshman year. Both coaches will be happy as he is a premier player from Michigan's '09 class. He's powerful and has the ability to step back and hit the three.

Whetstone and Northland move on.

Tanner Furno of Columbus Whetstone and Jarred Sullinger of Columbus Northland lead both their squads tonight with double-doubles. Both face off next weekend in the District-semi's at the Columbus Fairgrounds. We will dig deeper on Amish country aka Plain City soon.

A couple of Saturday Games in Michigan

A couple of the best unsigned senior guards in Michigan, Belleville's 6'1 Booker Stoudmire and Ann Arbor Pioneers' 6'3 Nate Robertson, go toe to toe. Pioneer hosts Belleville at 4:30pm as the non-conference game will prep both teams for state championship runs, which start on March 9th. Also, look for Belleville's active 6'7 junior forward Mohamed Conde and a couple of senior guards from Pioneer, 6'2 Nick Giard and 6'3 Dave Metzendorf.

A seven o'clock game features Saginaw Arthur Hill on the road against Romulus. This matchup has been a war over the years as Depaul's Dar Tucker and Iowa State's Dominique Buckley are a couple that have added interest in the past. Guard play should dominate this game as 5'6 junior point guard Maurice Jones is the star for Arthur Hill and has mid-major offers. Arhtur Hill's 6'2 shooting guard Chris Webb is an unsigned senior that can torch the nets. Romulus will counter with three senior guards, Filmore Bouldes, Rashad Porter, and Valdez Green.

Warren De La Salle Moves to CHSL Final

Warren De La Salle and Orchard Lake St. Mary's have had some wars over the years and last night was no different. The ten lead changes, four ties, physical play, and a game that came down to the wire were treats for basketball fans in attendance at this Catholic League AB playoff semi-final.

De La Salle rose to the occasion and will play at Calihan Hall face the University of Detroit-Jesuit/Novi Catholic Central winner. That game is tonight at Birmingham Marian.

De La Salle can be credited for making their free-throws down the stretch as 6' senior guard Alex Harville scored the two most important points of his game high fifteen points as he made the game winning free throws with just over a minute in regulation. Future Northwestern Wildcat's 6'4 Alex Marcotullio added another free-throw to finalize the game, 51-48.

Marcotullio (12 points) only had three points at the half and future Michigan State football/basketball Spartan 6'5 senior forward Dion Sims hadn't scored by the half. Sims picked up his third foul halfway through the middle of the second quarter and was on the bench until the third quarter.

De La Salle received steady scoring from Harville and Lehigh's future 6'10 center Kevin McCarthy scored sixteen while grabbing ten boards.

5'10 junior Evan Webster timely perimeter shooting led Orchard Lake St. Mary's with eleven points. Sims and 6' senior guard Jeff Jones added ten each. 6'6 freshman center Quaran Jones is physical and a name to look for in the future. His game was interrupted by early foul trouble as he scored seve in the games first nine minutes.

Harville and Jones are two different but talented 6' guards that are being recruited by Division III and NAIA schools.

Mike Fugate Breaks School Scoring Record

6' senior guard Mike Fugate is one of the most talented point guards in Michigan's 2009 class and his name is now at the top of White Lake Lakeland's all-time scoring record, formerly held by Gary Gleason ('78-80).

Fugate's 17 points last night in a win against Pinckney pushing his career total to 1,046. The Lakeland squad is 16-2 and Fugate leads the team in scoring with 18 ppg. The point total could be higher but the future Saginaw Valley State guard often defers to teammates, doesn't wonder from Lakeland's strict half-court offense, and has faced defenses geared to stop him over the last two-years.

Saginaw Valley's head coach Frankie Smith received a commitment from the three-year varsity starter last spring and GLIAC opponents are sure to have their hands full over the next four seasons.
