Quality basketball in Michigan can be found throughout the state and less than an hour south of the Mackinac Bridge is Gaylord, a Class A team with quality wins and an unblemished 7-0 record.
Among those quality wins lie back-to-back wins over Cadillac, with 6'8 wing Ben Simons '09 (Providence), and Mt. Pleasant, with 6'5 nationaly ranked guard Trey Zeigler '10. They are also coming off a tournament win in St. Ignace to close out 2008 and opened 2009 with a big 72-39 win over Big North rival, Alpena.
Head Coach Pat Enders has a well-balanced group of seniors, 6'4 guard/forward Quinn Woodhouse, 6'3 forward Lucas Wickert, 6'5 forward Joe Arnold, and 5'11 guard Nick Freeman. All are averaging double figures with Woodhouse leading the way with 16 ppg. He can do more than score as he shelled out 19 assists in the their tournament win and is among the leading rebounders on the squad. Woodhouse also owns the task of guarding the Blue Devils opponents best player and is getting looks from GLIAC programs but has DI size and is a more than solid athlete.
5'11 junior point guard Kurt Dutcher is playing solid defense and limiting turnovers.
They are the leaders of the Big North and have tough tasks ahead of them with Charlevoix (1/13) , Traverse City West (1/15), and Cadillac (1/29) lurking for the upset. As of now they are the best team in Michigan north of Saginaw.
