Whetstone and Northland move on.

Tanner Furno of Columbus Whetstone and Jarred Sullinger of Columbus Northland lead both their squads tonight with double-doubles. Both face off next weekend in the District-semi's at the Columbus Fairgrounds. We will dig deeper on Amish country aka Plain City soon.

A couple of Saturday Games in Michigan

A couple of the best unsigned senior guards in Michigan, Belleville's 6'1 Booker Stoudmire and Ann Arbor Pioneers' 6'3 Nate Robertson, go toe to toe. Pioneer hosts Belleville at 4:30pm as the non-conference game will prep both teams for state championship runs, which start on March 9th. Also, look for Belleville's active 6'7 junior forward Mohamed Conde and a couple of senior guards from Pioneer, 6'2 Nick Giard and 6'3 Dave Metzendorf.

A seven o'clock game features Saginaw Arthur Hill on the road against Romulus. This matchup has been a war over the years as Depaul's Dar Tucker and Iowa State's Dominique Buckley are a couple that have added interest in the past. Guard play should dominate this game as 5'6 junior point guard Maurice Jones is the star for Arthur Hill and has mid-major offers. Arhtur Hill's 6'2 shooting guard Chris Webb is an unsigned senior that can torch the nets. Romulus will counter with three senior guards, Filmore Bouldes, Rashad Porter, and Valdez Green.

Warren De La Salle Moves to CHSL Final

Warren De La Salle and Orchard Lake St. Mary's have had some wars over the years and last night was no different. The ten lead changes, four ties, physical play, and a game that came down to the wire were treats for basketball fans in attendance at this Catholic League AB playoff semi-final.

De La Salle rose to the occasion and will play at Calihan Hall face the University of Detroit-Jesuit/Novi Catholic Central winner. That game is tonight at Birmingham Marian.

De La Salle can be credited for making their free-throws down the stretch as 6' senior guard Alex Harville scored the two most important points of his game high fifteen points as he made the game winning free throws with just over a minute in regulation. Future Northwestern Wildcat's 6'4 Alex Marcotullio added another free-throw to finalize the game, 51-48.

Marcotullio (12 points) only had three points at the half and future Michigan State football/basketball Spartan 6'5 senior forward Dion Sims hadn't scored by the half. Sims picked up his third foul halfway through the middle of the second quarter and was on the bench until the third quarter.

De La Salle received steady scoring from Harville and Lehigh's future 6'10 center Kevin McCarthy scored sixteen while grabbing ten boards.

5'10 junior Evan Webster timely perimeter shooting led Orchard Lake St. Mary's with eleven points. Sims and 6' senior guard Jeff Jones added ten each. 6'6 freshman center Quaran Jones is physical and a name to look for in the future. His game was interrupted by early foul trouble as he scored seve in the games first nine minutes.

Harville and Jones are two different but talented 6' guards that are being recruited by Division III and NAIA schools.

Mike Fugate Breaks School Scoring Record

6' senior guard Mike Fugate is one of the most talented point guards in Michigan's 2009 class and his name is now at the top of White Lake Lakeland's all-time scoring record, formerly held by Gary Gleason ('78-80).

Fugate's 17 points last night in a win against Pinckney pushing his career total to 1,046. The Lakeland squad is 16-2 and Fugate leads the team in scoring with 18 ppg. The point total could be higher but the future Saginaw Valley State guard often defers to teammates, doesn't wonder from Lakeland's strict half-court offense, and has faced defenses geared to stop him over the last two-years.

Saginaw Valley's head coach Frankie Smith received a commitment from the three-year varsity starter last spring and GLIAC opponents are sure to have their hands full over the next four seasons.

Pups too much for the Tigers.

After witnessing the world's longest and poorest refereed JV Game last night we got a chance to see the annual showdown of Cleveland Heights vs. Canton McKinley. The Bulldogs of McKinley prevailed to a 70-56 victory on senior night. McKinley was lead by 5-foot-9, 2009, PG Terell Lipkins' 31 points, while he connected on 14 of 22 from the field. Lipkins is a lightning quick guard that has the ball on the string and can finish in transition or traffic with floaters, attacks at the rim or even hit you with a no-look drop-off. 6-foot-1, 2011, WG, Brandon Means from McKinley added 22 points, 11 rebounds and 6 dimes for the victors. While Cleveland Heights 6-foot-7, 2009, Center, Reegie Keeley (Ohio University signee) added 20 points along with 9 rebounds. 6-foot-3, 2009, CG, Sir Williams (Rider signee) added 10 points.
The zone defense and pesky play of McKinley stymied the Heights' squad as they went into a offensive-like coma during the first half and could not stretch the defense,Height's didn't attack the gaps or knock down the open shots against the zone. Although McKinley was undersized, they showed a lot more heart pushing the tempo and executing with their 4-out-1 offense. Lipkins' 31 points was a career high and a great way to go out on senior night. McKinley has 1 more regular season game before tournament action and it takes place this weekend at Akron SVSM.
Cleveland Heights which finishes the regular season at 17-3 (losses coming to Mentor, Toledo St. Johns and Canton McKinley) and will get ready for post-season play at the Warrensville District. Heights is one of the top 5 teams in the Cleveland area and will have a solid chance to get to regionals depending upon guard play and defense.
Names to remember:
Tigers
Reegie Keeley, Cleveland Heights
Sir Christian Williams,Cleveland Heights
Cody Smith, Cleveland Heights
Tyree Gaitor, Cleveland Heights

Bulldogs
Terell Lipkins, Canton McKinley
Brandon Means, Canton McKinley
Cecil Smith, Canton McKinley

Detroit Loyola Rallies in the Fourth

One half of the Catholic League's C-D division final is set as Loyola's 18-7 run was the difference Tuesday night against Madison Heights Bishop Foley.

The first quarter started off in the Ventures favor but an early four-point lead slowly dwindled over the next three-minutes as they turned the ball over three times in the last two minutes. The Bulldogs' 6'4 unsigned senior wing Jamar Ragland scored six of his game high eighteen in the last three minutes and the quarter ended, 17-11.

Ragland knocked down a three-pointer from the wing to start Loyola's second quarter scoring and their lead would grow as the first half ended, 29-19.

Loyola extended their lead to eleven after 5'8 senior guard Angelo Thurman was fouled on a made three from the wing. The four-point play wasn't completed but the Bulldogs had their biggest lead. The Ventures weren't rolling over as they were able to close the quarter on a 5-0 run capped by a three-pointer from 6'2 senior wing Antonio Ramirez. The quarter ended 36-30.

Bishop Foley's scoring success continued as they continued their 11-0 run to tie the score at 36. Ragland's scoring once again righted the Loyola ship as his go ahead bucket gave his team a lead they would never relinquish. Bishop Foley was held to five points in the last four-minutes of the game while the Bulldogs defense held strong. The 54-41 victory pits Loyola against Wednesday night's Royal Oak Shrine/Ann Arbor Gabriel Richard for the CD Championship at the University of Detroit's Calihan Hall this Sunday, February 28.

Ragland also grabbed fourteen rebounds and six were on the offensive glass. Ragland has an offer from Alcorn State and offers from schools closer to home might pull the trigger on this high-motor wing. Northwood was in the crowd.

5'9 senior guards Angelo Thurman (12 points) and D'angelo Tugwell (10 points) were key's offensivly and defensively for Loyola's head coach John Buscemi.

Bishop Foley also had seniors stepping up to the plate, 6'3 forward Brad Bochniak led the Ventures with 14 points and 6'2 guard Antonio Ramirez added 13.

Tuesday in Michigan

Plenty of games worthy of the trip, here are a few:

Catholic League Semi-Finals @ Birmingham Marion

6pm: Madison Heights Bishop Foley vs. Detroit Loyola. Loyola's 6'4 unsigned senior wing Jamar Ragland provides the energy. Can Foley counter?

7:45pm: Orchard Lake St. Mary's vs. Warren DeLaSalle. As good as the CHSL championship as both have Big Ten talent and a couple of unsigned seniors that DIII/NAIA programs should be all over. OLSM's 6'5 Michigan State football bound Dion Sims is a matchup problem on the court.

Okemos (15-1) @ Lansing Eastern (11-5) 7pm: A preview into the playoffs. Plenty of unsigned seniors with 6'5 sophomore forward LaDontae Henton, Eastern's difference maker.

Sr. Mary Catholic Central @ Flat Rock 7pm: Both teams are well over .500 and have a couple of solid juniors that are making names for themselves, SMCC's 6'4 small forward Keenan Wetzel and Flat Rock's 5'9 point guard Andrew Scarton.

Detroit Crockett (13-5) @ Taylor Kennedy (12-4) 7:30pm: Crockett's 6'6 power forward Devon Long '10 and Kennedy's explosive 6' unsigned senior guard Breland Hogan won't guard eachother.

Clarkston @ Rochester Adams 7pm: Clarkston is IPS' #3 team in Michigan and has the chips that could take the Wolves on a Class A championship run. GLIAC programs should camp out for this game.

Ann Arbor Huron a New Beginning

A rare freshman, junior varsity, and varsity triple-header took place at Ann Arbor Huron's Riverdome as the River Rats battled city rival Pioneer friday night. The rivalry has been lopsided over the last four-years as the Pioneers have only dropped one of those matchups. This cold February night shed light into the future and present state of the rivalry as Huron swept Pioneer.

Huron's varisty squad avenged a loss earlier in the season and there might be a rubber match on a neutral site (Dexter-district finals 3/13/09) in another two and a half weeks. The River Rats only have two seniors, 6'2 forward Montez Sistrunk and 6'2 forward Philip Mathew, and both provided the leadership needed to hold off a strong senior team in Pioneer. Huron stretched their first quarter lead to 33-21 at the half.

Huron's sophomore guard and wing duo of 6'3 AJ Mathew, seven points, and 6'4 Dante Williams, five points, were non-factors scoring wise but their shots created points for Sistrunk, 15 points, and another sophomore 6'4 Kyle Baker, eight points.

Pioneer's leader and one of Michigan's best unsigned point guards, 6'3 Nate Robertson, was limited by three first half fouls and picked up his fourth less than three minutes into the fourth. Robertson was haunted by ticky-tack calls throught the game and watched as the Pioneers' switched to a 1-3-1 defense that created turnovers at the top of the key and sliced the deficit to 44-41 to end the third quarter with 6'2 senior guard Nick Giard running the half court offense.

The fourth quarter was what one can expect in city rivalries as the game had intense moments after whistles and Pioneer's Roberston dished to 6'1 guard David Veals, 18 points, to cut the score to 50-49 with thirty-five seconds remaining in regulation. The Pioneers were forced to foul and AJ Mathew hit one of two free throws with under thirty seconds giving the road team life. The tie or lead was squandered by a turnover and 6'2 sophomore guard Matt Hasting's ensuing free-throws led to the final score, 53-49.

Huron's Head Coach Waleed Samaha solid core of young players on varsity will lead the the solid core of freshman and junior varsity players over the years. 6'4 junior forward Nate Schmidt and 6'2 junior wing Deandre Caldwell provide toughness and are glue players essential to winning.

Pioneer's tallest player 6'4 forward Colin Shileds scored eleven points.

Pioneer's Head Coach Rex Stanczak will have a solid core of players traveling through the ranks and if they don't make it there until their junior year don't let the slow rise fool you. Robertson is a perfect example as he didn't reach the varsity level until his junior year, a year after the Pioneer's gave the 2007 State Champion Saginaw Trojans one of their toughest battles of the year in the Class A state semi-finals. Robertson didn't lose a high school game until his junior year. He was held to five points but while he can shoot his game is passing and threading dimes is what he does best oftern finding teammates for lay-ups on this night and whenever you'll see him high-school or college.

College is the big question for Robertson as he's the darling of the top DIII/NAIA schools in the country, the DII's seem jittered to offer him as they could see a DI program countering and swiping their steal. Either way, the Division I or Division II program that puts Robertson in a Vertamax will have the biggest smile. His takes care of the ball and his vision is amongst the best, if not the best in the state of Michigan (Ray McCallum, jr., Isaiah Sykes, Vonn Jones, Mike Fugate), he plays within himself, and he changes speeds better than change-up specialist Tom Glavine.

Huron's jv won, 55-45, and the freshmen, 76-68.

Vinales' Big Night

North Farmington's head coach Tom Negoshian is an old school coach who calls himself one of the "Last Mohicans." He's happy to prepare basketball players for the next level in life and the hardwood. Twelve players that have never played varsity basketball joined the Raiders for the 2008-09 season and the team crept to one game shy of .500 after a win on the road against Southfield Tuesday night.

A returing player from last year's varsity is 6' junior guard Kyle Vinales, who was amongst the Oakland Activities Association's leading scorers last year. In last Tuesday night's win, Vinales took scoring to another level as he scored a career high 47 points on 14-21 shooting and hit four from deep. More impressive is the 17 points he scored in the fourth to help seal the deal, 64-58.

Negoshian named a majority of mid-major programs in the Great Lake's region that have inquired about his prize guard. Duquesne has also expressed interest. Vinales still has plenty of room to improve but he's headed in the direction of making a four-year school very happy. He's overcome many of the pressures that he had as a junior while assuming the leadership roll.

Despite Vinales' scoring abilities he stays true to his coach's offense often passing up scoring opportunities to make the planned pass.

Planning is all in the process and Negoshian's "old-school" ways are gearing Vinales up for bigger things down the road.

Eagles lift off.

With the the combination of offensive execution and lock down defense Lakewood St. Ed's found a way to fight off the feisty Wildcats of St. Ignatius 48-46. Ed's 2011 shooting guard Delbert Love caught fire in the 4th quarter knocking down 2 of 3 beyond the arch and the game winner to capture the tilt. 6=foot-9, 2011, Center Zach Price also had a solid game of late with over the right shoulder post moves and a 15-foot elbow jumper. Ed's has another solid chance to make it to the Regionals this year at Cleveland State.

Rubber Match Set: Pershing vs. Southeastern

Detroit's Public School League Finals are set after Friday night's semi-final showdown at Renaissance where Pershing dismantled Renaissance, 101-74, in the opener and Southeastern held off Henry Ford, 62-54.

Michigan State's Associate Head Coach Mark Montgomery sat mid-court while 6'9 senior center Derrick Nix went to work scoring 35 points and grabbing 21 rebounds. The future Spartan dominated and threw over the Phoenix' press leading to easy buckets on the opposite end.

5'10 senior guard Dennis Perry dropped five three pointers and fought to the hoop for 25 points. Perry is one of four guards in Head Coach A.W. Canada's rotation. Another guard, that Spartan fans should be familiar with is 6'1 junior guard Keith Appling who recorded a triple-double with 14 points, 13 rebound, and 10 assists has given a verbal commit to the Green and White.

On the other side of the coin, Renaissance played to the end and did a solid job of not letting the wheels come off after trailing 55-32 to end the first half. 6'5 small forward Daniel Sutherlin drilled a couple of three pointers, hit the glass hard for rebounds and subsequent put-backs while showing his athleticism with a couple of two-handed jams. Sutherlin battled for his 29 points and dozen boards as he represented the height and teeth of Head Coach Cam Nichol's front line. 6' senior guard Delano Collins scored 20 and played with a no die attitude through his final minutes. 6'1 junior guard Chene Phillips has stepped it up offensively in the second half of the season and scored 17 in this contest.

Southeastern's 6'8 sophomore power forward Percy Gibson scored all of the game's first seven points and the Jungaleers never trailed. The game was tied at 18 after Henry Ford's 6'1 guard Victor Edge knocked down a three-pointer but 6'1 senior guard Kimani Boynton answered with a three-point play the old fashioned way. Southeastern led at the half, 30-25.

6'5 sophomore Brandan Kearney's three early in the third quarter sparked a seven point run leading to a 39-28 lead. Henry Ford's 6'5 wing Matt Hunter scored five in the quarter and came up with key steals but the Tractor's trailed 48-36 after the third quarter. The fourth quarter started off with Southeastern going on a 7-3 run that almost took the breath from Head Coach Ken Flower's Ford team. 5'9 senior point guard Demario Prince scored six straight points for Ford cutting the lead to 59-53 in the closing moments of the game.

Boynton scored 14 and dropped ten dimes. Kearney scored eleven and hit a couple from beyond the arc while grabbed a lions share of rebounds. Gibson scored a dozen.

Hunter led all scorers with 15 and also showed some range with a couple from deep. Prince and 6' guard Warren Jackson both scored eleven.

Next Friday the championship will be decided after a consulation game between Ford and Renaissance. Pershing and Southeastern will play their third game of the year. Ford an Renaissance the same. The schools can meet up a fourth time early in the state playoffs.

St. Eds vs. St. Iggy

Tonight Lakewood St. Eds takes on St. Ignatius in a Cleveland private school showdown. Both schools are very well coached and both display college propsects at each level. The game is at St. Edwards and we expect a packed house with great on the ball defense. Stay tuned for more!

Federal League: Friday Night

Things are getting interesting in the Federal League. by Josh Weir

Tonight’s two league tournament semifinals are rematches of regular-season classics. No. 4 seed McKinley goes to top-seed Jackson, and No. 3 GlenOak visits No. 2 Hoover. Here’s a look at these high school boys basketball matchups.

McKinley at Jackson

THE RECORDS

McKinley 12-3, 5-3; Jackson 12-3, 7-1

THE LAST TIME

Jan. 2 at Jackson

McKinley 63, Jackson 62 After trailing most of the night, Jamon McClain’s second-effort bucket in the lane with 8.4 seconds left proved to be the difference for the Bulldogs. McKinley settled for perimeter shots early but started carving up Jackson’s zone defense as the night progressed. On the other end, McKinley’s harassing pressure made it difficult for Jackson to get the ball to 6-foot-8 Mark Henniger and 6-6 Josh Egner.

WHAT THEY’VE DONE SINCE

The Bulldogs lost three of their next four games after beating Jackson, including at home to Hoover and GlenOak. They seem to have righted the ship, winning five in a row heading into tonight.

The Polar Bears haven’t lost since McKinley. Their seven-game winning streak includes road wins at Hoover and GlenOak.

THE SKINNY

Plenty of post touches spell success for Jackson. No McKinley regular stands taller than 6-4. McKinley’s numerous penetrators would be wise to take it right at Jackson and try to get the big boys in foul trouble.

JACKSON X-FACTOR

The Polar Bears will be tough to beat if guards Brad DuPont, Eric Pace and Dan Tamburro continue their steady play. McKinley’s pressure will test them.

MCKINLEY X-FACTOR

If the Bulldogs hit perimeter shots and space the floor, guarding them is a nightmare. McClain, Terrell Lipkins, Tommie Harris and Branden Means are deadly off the dribble.

POINTS TO PONDER

Henniger is averaging 29 points in his last two games vs. McKinley. He leads Jackson at 21.0 points a game.

Egner, a 13.2 point-per-game scorer, is averaging 17.4 in his last five games.

When the Bulldogs hold an opponent to 60 points or less, they are 9-0.

GlenOak at Hoover

THE RECORDS

GlenOak 13-3, 6-2; Hoover 13-2, 7-1

THE LAST TIME

Jan. 30 at GlenOak

Hoover 64, GlenOak 61 (2OT)

Nyles Evans’ 3-point play with 3.7 seconds left in the second overtime proved to be the winner. The Vikings completely controlled the pace with a sharp, deliberate attack. Their box-and-1 defense was enough to hold C.J. McCollum, individually, and the Golden Eagles, collectively, to season lows in points — 22 and 61, respectively. And that was in 40 minutes of basketball.

WHAT THEY’VE DONE SINCE

A night after losing to Hoover, GlenOak traveled to Dayton Dunbar — then ranked fourth in Ohio’s Division II — and knocked off the Wolverines behind 35 points from McCollum. The following week, however, brought another home league loss to Jackson.

The Vikings have won three times since GlenOak, including two nail-biters against Lake. Overall, the Vikings have won seven straight since losing to Jackson on Jan. 16.

THE SKINNY

Tempo. Tempo. Tempo. If the game gets going fast, point guard Storm Sanders and the GlenOak attack flourish. A slower pace to GlenOak is like putting a sports car in mud. Few teams dictate tempo as well as Hoover.

HOOVER

X-FACTOR

The size and strength of Cory Veldhuizen, Tyler Fausnight, Nick Sommers and Joe Gross are difficult for GlenOak to match. Veldhuizen, Sommers and Fausnight combined for 35 points and 23 rebounds the first time. Gross missed the game because of illness.

GLENOAK X-FACTOR

Who’s going to step up for GlenOak and make plays down the stretch beside McCollum? He can’t do it all by himself. Or can he?

POINTS TO PONDER

McCollum has scored at least 33 points in each of his last three games and is averaging a Stark County-high 30.0 this season.

The Vikings have won games with baskets in the final five seconds on three occasions this season. Hoover is 5-0 in games decided by 5 points or less.

Seven Vikings have led the team in scoring this season, with Evans’ five times leading the way. Only once has anyone other than McCollum led GlenOak in scoring.

Double-Header in the D

Detroit, MI.- Public School League quarterfinal action at Detroit Cass Tech produced plenty of talent Wednesday as Pershing faced off against Crockett in the opener and Renaissance took on Central.

Pershing has 6'9 center Derrick Nix '09 and 6'1 combo guard Keith Appling '10 that are headed to Michigan State but, they have a lot in the cupboard that provide key ingredients to the Doughboy's success. Their battle versus Crockett was a true test for the Rocket's 6'6 235-pound Devin Long '10 and the big guy faired well against Nix in the loss. The game was relatively close and very high scoring in the first quarter, 24-18, as 6'1 guard Ben Richbow '09 scored the majority of his eleven points. Pershing was up 42-32 to start the second half and the lead grew from there and finished 68-41.

Appling led Pershing with 15 points and was a catalyst in Pershing's second half surge. He shoots the ball without effort and he's starting to show off his athleticism towards the rim consistently. For Spartan fans in attendance, Nix showed me three things that I have never seen him do: attempt an alley-oop, hit a right handed hook shot from five feet, and knock down a SMOOTH GO TO fade away jumper from just inside of ten feet. He also grabbed double digit rebounds and scored twelve and he's looking better every time I see him. 6'5 wing Juwan Howard, jr. '10 knocked down some big shots and is a go to guy on the perimeter. Howard, jr. plays with poise and is a future shooting guard in the making on the mid-major level. Richbow scored eleven and knocked down a couple of threes while playing solid defense. He's a super solid DIII player that might catch the eye of a DII program that might be happy they stole one in the coming years. 6'7 senior center Tevin Conrad weighs in at 310-pounds and scored ten and cleaned up the glass when he was subbed in for Nix. Conrad told IPS after the game that he's headed to Saginaw Valley St. to play football to the relief other GLIAC basketball programs. 5'10 guard Dennis Perry '09 didn't get the nick-name "Lil' Scrappy" for nothing as he battles on the boards, bowls to the bucket, knock down threes, and play in your face defense for nothing. 5'10 point guard Deon Dismuke played limited minutes and made the most of them as he did what any DIII/NAIA school would want and that's to hit the mid-range jumper, play defense, pass the ball, and most important take care of the ball.

Crockett's Long is "the next best big-man in Detroit," according to Nix. Long scored ten points and was limited because of a third foul in the second quarter. He grabbed near double-digit boards and watching him go against Nix was a treat. Long is getting looks and offers faster than a storm rolling through Denver. If there were one player that made a huge splash on to the public scene it would be 6'4 athlete Brandon Donaldson '10. Donaldson scored eleven but his six blocks and his explosiveness is eye opening. 5'7 point-guard Tevin Fields '09 would be on a lot of DII and Low-Division I program's recruiting list if he was 6'. He's not but he can still get in the lane, make the right pass, take care of the ball, and he knocked down a couple of threes amongst his sixteen points.

The following game kept fans in their seats until the end as it took 6' point guard Delano Collin's '09 lay-up with eleven seconds remaining on the clock giving Renaissance a 63-62 lead and the final score. Central looked they were going on a route as they led 18-6 after the first but Renaissance rallied and closed the lead, 29-24, to end the half. The lead was closer to end the third, 43-39.

Starting the fourth quarter, Renaissance jumped out to a 5-0 run and took the lead on 6'5 small forward Daniel Sutherlin's '09 tip. The game was tied three times before Central held their own on the defensive end and 6'3 guard DeAngelo Hailey '09 completed a three-point play giving Central a 53-48 lead with 3:43 on the clock. 6'3 wing Darius Ware '09 and 5'9 point guard Demarco Johnson '09 helped keep Central's lead as Renaissance's Collins, Sutherlin, and 6'1 guard Chene Phillips made big plays in the games waning moments.

Collins is a winner and one of those players that seems to have been around forever as he's been on the big scene for four-years after a Class B state championship run as a freshman. Collins led the Phoenix in scoring with twenty points and told me he has offers to play basketball and football from Grand Valley State and Saginaw Valley State. 6'3 wing Brandyn Mungo '09 reverse lay-upped his way to 18 points. Mungo is a can't miss player for Division III schools as he provides a little bit of everything with a lot of agility. Daniel Sutherlin is at minimum a Division II player and should garnish looks from a large handful of Low-Division I and maybe higher for some programs. Sutherlin showed perimeter skills with a three-pointer and toughness in the post as he scored 14 and grabbed a dozen rebounds. Phillips scored nine and is more noted for his defense. Expect more from Phillips as he's starting to show up big in clutch moments.

Central's marquee player is the MR. PSL award winner, Hailey, he led all scorers with 22 and can stake a claim for best guard in Michigan's 2009 class. He's a natural two who knocked down some big shots from beyond the perimeter and created his own shot. 6'3 wing Darius Ware '09 showed the mid-range game that I was accustomed but also went further than that with his athleticism. Ware dropped in 18 and possibly Central's Valedictorian. Johnson scored 15 and is another tough PSL point guard who has the ability to play on the next level.

PSL Playoffs: Breakdown

The top two teams from each of Detroit's Public School League four divisions will duel it out in quarterfinal games at 5:30/7:30 Renaissance and Cass Tech on Wednesday, February 11. The semi-final games will be played at 5:30/7:30 Renaissance on Friday, February 13. The champion will be decided after a consolation game at the University of Detroit-Mercy's Calihan Hall on Friday, February 20.

The East division's teams, Southeastern and Pershing, are amongst the best in the state and either is a tournament favorite. They split their season matchups and can only face eachother at Calihan Hall. Pershing has two players, 6'9 center Derrick Nix '09 and 6'1 guard Keith Appling '10, that are headed to Michigan State. Southeastern has two of the state's best sophomores, 6'8 power forward Percy Gibson and 6'5 Brandan Kearney, that are under the watchful eye of coaches across the country. Pershing has been the favorite to win the City Championship multiple times since 2005. Southeastern's Head Coach Mark White led Renaissance 5:30 is the start time for Pershing where they Crockett at Cass Tech. At the same time, Southeastern battles City at Renaissance.

The West division presents Henry Ford and Renaissance. Renaissance won back to back City Championships in 2003 and 2004. Henry Ford's head coach Ken Flowers was an assistant and head coach for the closed Redford which won three championnships from 2005-2007. Both teams are made of many glue players and seniors that have brought their teams this far. 6' point guard Delano Collins has been a staple in the Renaissance line-up for four years and 6'5 small forward Daniel Sutherlin has developed into a Low Division 1 prospect in the same time. Renaissance travels to Cass Tech and meets up with Central at 7:30. Henry Ford has one of the city's best point guards and former City champion, 5'9 senior DeMario Prince, and a top twenty junior in Michigan, 6'5 wing Matt Hunter. Henry Ford will be without 6'6 senior power forward Karriem Baker in their 7:30 matchup with Cass Tech at Renaissance on Wednesday. He's scheduled to return on Friday for semi-final action if Henry Ford wins.

Cass Tech and Central represent the Southeast division and both could be considered surprise teams at this stage in the year. Cass Tech hasn't made the city playoffs in the 21st century while Central has particpated the last three years. Cass Tech is a junior laden team that only won two games last year. The Technicians have plenty of size with 6'5 senior Darrien Schaefer, 6'7 junior power forward Shannon Williams, and 6'6 junior power forward Daniel Bellomy. Central has the MR. PSL award winner 6'3 senior guard DeAngelo Hailey who is one of the state's best shooters. Central also has legendary PSL coach Ben Kelso who might slow things down just a bit if Renaissance decides to run. They play Renaissance at Cass Tech in the late game on Wednesday. Cass Tech meets up with Henry Ford in the late game at Renaissance.

City is a two-time Southwest division winner while Crockett made the playoffs for the first-time in four-years. City has one of the state's best unsigned seniors in the diverse 6'5 forward Devon Patton and size in the middle with 6'7 junior center Cris Beacham. Crockett has a couple of dimunitive senior guards, the shooter Daniel Price and the play-maker Tevin Fields. Crockett also has one of the state's best big-men in 6'6 250 pound Devin Long. City faces Southeastern at Renaissance to open up Wednesday night action. Crockett ia the underdog as they battle Pershing at Cass Tech.

Should be great.

Mr. PSL: DeAngelo Hailey

Detroit is rich in basketball history and the 2008-09 Public School League season has presented moments that will live with fans, players, and coaches forever. The P.S.L. also has honors awards for the top player and a the City Championship that will be decided at the University of Detroit's Calihan on Friday, February 20th..

The first award has been decided and goes to the best player by vote of coaches and the 2009 class presented plenty of choices.

Pershing's 6'9 Derrick Nix (Michigan State U.)

Cody's 5'9 point guard Demetrius Ford

Renaissance's 6'5 forward Daniel Sutherlin

Central's 6'3 guard DeAngelo Hailey

Renaissance's 6' point guard Delano Collins

Southeastern's 6' guard Kimani Boynton

Northwestern's 6'5 wing Asaad Robinson

Henry Ford's 5'9 point guard Demario Prince

Hailey was the winner as voted on by the coaches. He is the key to Central making the P.S.L. playoffs and his next game is at 7:30 vs. Detroit Renaissance in quartfinal action at Cass Tech. He can shoot the ball very well and is a player who can create his own shot. Hailey provides tough defense for Head Coach Ben Kelso and the Central squad.

Columbus Dispatch Seeding Projection

This Report was posted in the Columbus Dispatch by Steve Blackredge. We will see how close the Dispatch is after the OHSAA district meeting.

DIVISION I

1. Northland (16-1). There can't be any argument here. The Vikings' non-league schedule has been brutal, including Cincinnati Aiken, Canton Timken, Dayton Dunbar and San Diego and the City League North is no picnic with Beechcroft, Brookhaven and Whetstone twice each.

2. Dublin Scioto (16-1). The Irish are allowing only 42.7 points per game and just one opponent has topped 60. Tony Bisutti always gets the most out of his players.

3. Grove City (15-2). The high-scoring and versatile Greyhounds have been tripped up just twice, both to Ohio Division opponents.

4. Newark (14-3). Each of the Wildcats' three defeats came by just three points.

5. Beechcroft (15-2). The Cougars are deep and balanced and are playing with a lot of confidence.

6. Dublin Coffman (15-2). The Shamrocks are solid, but tend to play down to the level of their competition, as evidenced in both of their defeats and a handful of close wins over inferior opponents.

7. Gahanna (12-4). They're not very big, but the Lions' one-on-one ability make them a threat any night. Wins over Grove City and Newark top their resume.

8. Upper Arlington (15-3). People keep saying that Upper Arlington is overrated, citing an underwhelming nonleague schedule. Its three losses were by 3, 3 and 5 points. This is a well coached, fundamentally sound team.

9. Mount Vernon (12-4). The Yellow Jackets have been lost in the shuffle much of the year. They've played a strong nonleague schedule, losing to Dublin Scioto and Newark, and have defeated everyone in its league but Olentangy Orange.

10. Westerville South (13-4). This is the kind of well coached, defensive oriented team that might make noise in the tournament.

11. Westerville Central (11-5). Central is largely a two-man team with Jerrell Fernandez and Max VanMeter, but that duo is outstanding.

12. Franklin Heights (11-5). Ten of Heights' games have been decided by six or fewer points.

13. Reynoldsburg (11-6). The Raiders, who have won 10 of their past 13 games, have held their own against a solid schedule.

DIVISION II

1. DeSales (13-3). The Stallions have played a stout schedule and all of their defeats came by six or fewer points. This is easily the most talented team in the district, but consistency isn't always there.

2. Canal Winchester (13-3). With no superstars to lean on, the Indians are relying on cohesiveness and balance.

3. Lakewood (14-2). The Lancers are a great story, but will their lack of a recent tradition hurt them in the tournament?

4. Eastmoor Academy (11-5). This isn't one of Eastmoor's better teams in recent years, but the Warriors seem to get by with grit and strong guard play each game.

5. Olentangy Orange (12-5). Point guard Zack Joseph has the tournament experience to lead Orange to the Fairgrounds in its first season.

6. Big Walnut (11-6). The Eagles have won six of their past seven games and seem to be jelling at the right time.

7. Watterson (8-8). That CCL schedule prepares the Eagles well.

8. Granville (9-6). The Blue Aces have been streaky all season.

9. Bexley (7-6). After a 5-1 start, the Lions have struggled a bit without Seth White, who enrolled early at Ball State University.

10. New Albany (7-8). The Eagles have played in a lot of close games and beaten some quality teams.

DIVISION III

1. Hartley (12-4). Give Hartley the nod because of the way it is playing (eight straight wins) and who it has beaten (DeSales, Ready, Worthington Christian, Columbus Academy).

2. Grandview (13-3). Yes, I realize that Grandview beat Hartley, but the Hawks play in the CCL and the Bobcats are in the MSL Cardinal. That's a big difference.

3. Madison Plains (12-3). The Golden Eagles have split with all three teams they lost to. It's difficult for those of us in the Columbus area to gauge the South Central Ohio League.

4. Pleasant (11-3). Pleasant has won five straight, including a win over Highland.

5. Highland (9-3). Despite dropping three of its past four games, the Scots boast a quality win over Centerburg. ...

6. Centerburg (12-5). ... Which is why the Trojans, who have lost three straight slide down a spot.

7. North Union (12-3). After starting 9-0, the youthful Wildcats have returned to Earth.

8. Heath (10-5). The Bulldogs have fared well in a decent MSL Ohio Division.

9. Elgin (8-6). Winner in five of its past six games.

10. Ready (8-8). This is a much better team than its record indicates.

11. Bloom-Carroll (9-6). Tom Petty has won too many district titles to discount.

12. Columbus Academy (7-8). Since mid-January, the Vikings have recorded wins over Granville, Newark Catholic, Heath and Lakewood, and lost to Hartley by five points.

DIVISION IV

1. Worthington Christian (12-4). This isn't a great Worthington Christian team, but the CCL and an ambitious nonleague schedule will have the Warriors ready for the tournament.

2. Newark Catholic (12-3). The Green Wave, who have dropped three of their past five games, have any average winning margin of just six points.

3. Fisher Catholic (11-3). All of its defeats (Hartley, Harvest Prep, Grandview) came in a two-week span over the holiday. Luke Roesch is a dominant big man.

4. Harvest Prep (11-4). Michael Thornton's team has spent much of the season finding itself and with six wins in seven games, seems to be peaking at the right time.

5. Tree of Life (16-1). Tree of Life's success in the Mid-Ohio Christian Athletic League speaks for itself, but I'd like to see the Trojans play some better nonleague competition. Beating South in overtime doesn't really count for much.

6. Africentric (8-9). Don't forget that the Nubians have played all Division I and II opponents. They've also won six of its past seven games.

7. Wellington (8-7). The Jaguars have come on strong since a 1-5 start.

8. Fairfield Christian (10-3). It's hard to gauge Fairfield Christian because both its games against Tree of Life were postponed. The young program made big strides reaching the district semifinals last season.

OSU News:Lewis, Burke and Price in the 614.

2011 is a another talented class full of prospects for the state of Ohio and with that comes big time visits. Trey Burke, Trey Lewis and Zack Price will all be taking in the Minnesota vs. Ohio State game Saturday evening at Value City Arena in Columbus, Ohio. Burke attends Northland High School, Lewis is from Garfield Heights a suburb south of Cleveland and Price attends state powerhouse Lakewood St. Edwards. Here is the skinny on each prospect.

Trey Burke, 5-foot-11, PG, Columbus Northland, holds offers from, Akron,Ohio,Kent State,Cleveland State and James Madison.

Trey Lewis, 6-foot-, SG, Garfield Heights, holds offers from, St. Joes, Akron, Ohio, Kent State and Cleveland State.

Zach Price, 6-foot-10, C, Lakewood St. Eds, holds offers from, Ohio State, Michigan State, numerous Big Tens and also is getting interest from ACC programs.

Double the Fun.

Tonight in Central-Ohio there will be two solid late Division One non-conference games featuring numerous college prospects. Here are the details:
-Lima Sr is at Grove City and Canton Timken at Marion Franklin.

Here is a brief rundown of the premiere players:
6-foot-3, 2010, WG, Antone Hutchins, Lima Sr.
6-foot-7, 2009, PF, Jon Smith, Grove City
6-foot-7, 2012, WF, Elijah Macon, Marion Franklin
6-foot-2, 2011, WG, Jeremy McCoy, Marion Franklin
6-foot-5, 2009, PF, Mike Guyton, Marion Franklin
6-foot-7, 2009, PF, Cameron Howard, Canton Timken
6-foot-5, 2009, WG, Jared Porrini, Canton Timken
6-foot-1, 2010, 2G, Corey Porrini, Canton Timken
6-foot-4, 2011, WF, Rakim Reed, Canton Timken
6-foot, 2009, CG, Chaz Moore, Canton Timken
6-foot-9, 2011, C, Desmond Rorie, Canton Timken
6-foot-2, 2009, WG, AJ Cox, Canton Timken
5-foot-11, 2011, PG, Jehvon Clark, Canton Timken

"Jack" of all Trades!

6-foot-3, 2011, WG, Traevon Jackson dominated the ball on both ends last night as Westerville South beat crosstown rival Westerville North 53-49. Jackson poured in 18 points and snarled 12 rebounds for the victors.South's record is now 13-4 and 10-2 in conference play. Jackson knocked down the 3-ball from the wing spots, showed a hesitation crossover pull-up from 15 feet and of course a slashing visionary game. Jackson who already has a college body, has shown more consistency with his jump shot and also a fluid weak hand. The thing we notice about Jackson is his ability to create off the dribble, along with inner drive to defend/contest on defense and best of all, his ability to go rebound outside of his area. Jackson could possibly be the most physical and productive 2011 prospect in the state of Ohio.
Side note: 6-foot-6, 2010, 4/3, Ralph Hill added 24 points for North.

Faces in the Crowd: Jimmy Jackson (Former OSU Great), U of Dayton and Walsh College.

Michigan: Big Time Saturday

A special treat to fans across the state and the tip-offs are two hours apart but three hours away. Should one leave the Country Day-Saginaw Arthur Hill battle early and miss all the action to travel to Muskegon Heights to watch the Tigers take on Kalamazoo Central and take in more action then I might as well keep on with a run on sentence because that's what you'll get used to as watch these four high-powered teams squeak the court.

A couple of Class A vs. Class B matchups and as close to hypothetical Cross-Class Championships as one may find in the state.

The 5pm matchup you can find on the southwest corner of Lahser and 13 Mile one can find (a day after Chris Webber's jersey was retired by the Sacramento Kings) the house that Chris built, Detroit Country Day. Class A Saginaw Arthur Hill makes the trek down I-75 to take on Class B and Nationally Yellow Jackets.

The matchup of the game presents a pair of nationally recruited point guards in Country Day's 6'1 Ray McCallum, jr. and Arthur Hill's 5'7 Maurice Jones. The talent on the court is outright ridiculous and a forecast of the present and future.

If, you're a basketball fan this should be like a kid just waiting to get in the game as the gym will be packed and arriving early will have it's benefits as there's some and comers on both jv squads.

The 7pm matchup near the coast of Lake Michigan and 80 miles east of Milwaukee lay Muskegon Heights (the house that Bird Chapman built?), a hot bed of hoops over the years in Michigan. Class A Kalamazoo Central will be in town ensuring a well spent five dollars and bandaging for the rims after the first half ensuring one of the state's most exciting games of the year.

The questions of the game are for Muskegon Heights and whether 5'9 senior point guard Ricarri Stimage can find holes in the Central defense and can 6'7 junior Julian Plummer hold down 6'5 senior power forward Doug Anderson and the high-wire act that he brings into town.

Enjoy a great Saturday of hoops in Michigan no matter how far the travel.
