Garfield Heights defeated Brush 83-64 in a NEO conference game on Thursday night. Tay Jones dropped 36 points (14-21 fgs) on dribble drive spin moves, spot up 3's and slashing drives. Jones made the 36 look effortless as his future mentor and St. Joe's coach Phil Martelli was in the crowd observing the future Hawk. Jones' sidekick 6-foot, 2011, SG Trey Lewis chipped in a steady 21 points and hit four 3's from beyond the arc, along with his 21 he also picked up a offer from St. Joes!
Brush's 2010, SG, Nate Tait had 26 points in defeat as he showed the ability to get to the rim and finish in traffic. He was challenged in the 3rd quarter as Garfield extended the pressure and made him create ill-advised shots. 6-foot-3, 2012, PF Curtis Oakley added 22 points and showed a poise unlike most freshman bigs. Oakley who is the nephew of fellow NBA great Charles Oakley showed no genetic let down in attacking the cup, facing up from 15 and even knocking down a 3-ball. Oakley and Tait will defiantly be a 1-2 punch to reckon with during tournament time. Meanwhile the 3-headed Garfield interior monster of 6'9,Mario Hines, 6'8,Fred Chatmon and 6'6Will Weeks contributed 20 points and 25 rebounds for the Bulldogs.
Garfield is one of the Top 3 teams in the Cleveland Regional to advance to Columbus. We will see if they can get out of Warrensville District with the likes of Cleveland Heights and Warren Harding in their Bracket. Stay tuned for more..
