Nationally ranked Country Day Rolls

#5 in the most recent USA Today national ranking, Detroit Country Day went on the road Tuesday night to face Orchard Lake St. Mary's. While the host Eaglets were able to keep the game relatively close through the first two minutes of the second quarter, reality set in as D.C.D. went on an 11-1 run and closed the half with a 30-16 lead.

The Country Day onslaught continued and the third quarter ended, 47-27. With the seniors on the bench exxited halfway through the fourth quarter the Country Day bench extended their lead and the game ended, 64-39.

Country Day's height is unparalleled in Michigan and perhaps the nation on the high school level. 6'11 center Da'Shonte Riley '09 grabbed 15 rebounds, blocked five shots, and added ten points with Oregon State and South Florida in attendance. 6'8 power forward Donnavan Kirk '09 (Miami, FL.) has improved as much as any of the big men over the last four years and the added hook shot is a reason why. Kirk scored eight on three of seven shooting from the field and was 2-4 ft line. 6'10 center Amir Williams '11 can make a claim for the top sophomore in Michigan and he scored six points with eight boards and five blocks. 6'7 power forward Urbane Bingham '11 is another young post player who is developing his game. 6'5 wing Jordan Dumars '09 (South Florida) is the short guy on the front line and he's the bomber from deep. He had 14 points with four three pointers.

Ray McCallum, jr. has convinced many in Michigan that he's the top point guard in Michigan and he had another solid game with quality defenders shadowing and double teaming him from the game's tip. The state's top point guard finished with ten points and brought down six rebounds. Sometimes you don't need to be the man especially when 6' point guard Chris Fowler '11 is the back-up. Young Fowler had seven assists. His older brother, Bennie Fowler, is headed to Michigan State for football and is the starting two-guard who uses athleticism to fill the lanes, grab rebounds, and provide defensive glue on the perimeter.

Moving on to the O.L.S.M squad and sticking to a M.S.U. -football theme, future Spartan WR/TE and 6'5 forward Dion Sims '09 on the basketball court had a game Head Coach Izzo would be proud of as he led all scorers with 20 points and challenged the defense on the inside and outside. He showed his athleticism with a dunk off the wing over Amir Williams in which he was fouled. The free-throw fell short.

5'9 point guard Gary Hunter '10 provided strength, quickness, and leadership in a cast of players that did their best to contain the Yellow Jackets' guards.

This will be another good matchup next year as their annual meeting looks like it will continue.
